8:50 to Atlanta (2008)

for flute and vibraphone

Duration: 50”

Score and parts available from the composer

8:50 to Atlanta was written in honor of the 50th anniversary of the College Music Society.  The Society requested composer members to create miniature works (no longer than 50 seconds) to be presented at their 2008 National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.  My contribution to the project is a frantic work for flute and vibraphone that imagines two trains racing on parallel tracks towards Atlanta.  The title refers, in addition to its nod to train schedules, to the number of pitch-classes used in the piece (an octatonic scale) and its length (exactly fifty seconds).
