Through This Same Garden (2009)

for baritone and bass clarinet

Duration: 8'

Score and parts available from the composer

2009 marked the 150th anniversary of Edward Fitzgerald’s English translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.  In collaboration with the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, my students at Southwestern University and I composed new song settings of selected quatrains from The Rubaiyat.  My own setting of six quatrains presents the text in a strophic form for Baritone.  While all six stanzas are sung to the same music, the Bass Clarinet’s melodies dance around each stanza differently, responding to the variety of sentiments on the transience of life expressed in Khayyam’s words.
