Passacaglia exists as both the first movement of my Symphony no. 1 and as a single movement on its own. I have re-envisioned the Baroque of a structural, repeating ground-bass as an ever-present eight-note pitch-class set. First heard in the cellos and basses at the outset, the eight-note set is continuously transformed into a variety of melodic and harmonic elements that serve as either foreground or background material throughout the work.
