Generatio (2001)

for chorus (SSATTBB)

This work represents my second attempt to set these profound words from the book of Ecclesiastes (1:4,7).  The first attempt was in the middle portion of a large, three-movement work for chorus and orchestra (1992-93).  While I was ultimately dissatisfied with that original setting, I kept revisiting the text as a powerful, poetic representation of humanity's arrogance in its treatment of the world.  The earth was here long before we arrived and it will likely be here long after we have gone.  This newer setting, I think, better captures the anger I have felt when witnessing the destructive ways in which we behave on our planet and the perseverance the planet displays despite our behavior.
